Week 3 Blog: Podcasts

Podcasts!

To be honest, I do not know anything about podcasts. In fact, I have never heard of them till now and they frustrate me if I cannot understand them. You see, I am hearing impaired and it does not do me any good to listen to them because I do not hear them very well. Yeah sure, there are technology out there in the world that will help turn audios into texts so I can read them instead. However, I cannot afford those things.

Now I could watch the video podcasts and make out what bits and pieces of them are talking about, but still it will not do me any good. You see, not all podcasts will have captions on the video. That is I get by watching TV. I have captions that I read instead of hearing. After all, I read better than I hear.

If I ever have to make a podcasts for my class, I have to take into considerations as to who will be the audience. If my audience does not have any hearing problems, then I can give an audio podcast along with a video podcast. However, if I have an audience that is deaf or hard of hearing, then I need to adjust the podcast to meet the accommodations of the disabilities' standard.

I might have not been able to understand the audio podcasts I was suppose to listen to, however, I did get a chance to watch a video podcast. I watch a Walt Mosspuppet: Tech News and Opinion podcast. It was a video of a puppet talking about technology. Unfortunately, I did not understand a word he was talking about because I could not read his lip very well.

So my opinion of podcasts: they are very frustrating for me. If I was one of the rich people in the world, I would actually buy technology that will benefit me. I am not a rich person so I will have to make do with what I have. Podcasts may be for others, but it will not be for me.

REDO BLOG POST: April 30, 2010
I did the best I can listening to a couple of these podcasts, but I still had trouble with them. So I was only able to make out what two of the podcasts were talking about.

EPISODE 90: A CONVERSATION ABOUT PODCASTING WITH MEDIA COORDINATORS
-WITH DAVID WARLIK

This was talking about using podcast in a couple of ways: at the library and at home. One of the things the conversation was about is podcasting in the library. Podcast in the library will allow easy access to teachers and students. It is also effective because teachers can teach the students how to look for things they need for their class.
Another thing the conversation talked about was some positive effect of podcasts. When teachers are lecturing in their classrooms, the students are doing the best they can to write down notes. However, it is not enough sometimes because they may miss some important information. So if the teachers record their classes and post them online, then the students can refer back to the video/podcast made. This will also help students who miss a class! They can stay up-to-date with their class and not have to worry about getting behind in their classes!!

KIDCAST 62: SOME THOUGHTS ON VIDEO PODCASTING
-WITH DAN SCHMIT

I believe Dan was talking about the difference between video podcasting and audio podcasting. Some positive things about both of them together are that they can both be uploadable and easy access to them. Also, anybody can do either one of them.
Video and audio podacast are different from each other in many ways.
1. Time: Making video podcasts take more time and patience than audio podcasts.
2. Effort: Video requires more effort with technical stuff like the lighting, sound system, background, and etc. All you have to do with audio is to write down what you want to do and just read it out loud as you are recording yourself, which is simple enough.
3. Visual: You may not be able to do too much visual with audio as you can with videos.
These were just some of the differences I think I heard. Both of them are very effective in their own unique ways. For people like me, we would rely more on videos than we would with audio because if you have a hearing disabilities, you will experience some problems with audio podcast.

MY OPINION OF PODCAST
I believe that podcasts are great for some people. It is not for everybody. Due to my hearing loss, I would benefit more from Video Casts than I would from anything else.

  1. Hey Tiffany, I really enjoyed reading your blog today. I shared the same experience as you with podcasts. I had no idea what a podcast was before I did this project. But I was able to listen to the podcast and never thought about how hearing impaired has to deal with podcasts. I would understand why you would be so frustrated with this podcast project. I do not blame you for wanting to see a video format of the podcast to see the text on screen to better understand the material. I myself had fun listening to some of the podcasts but found the others to be pretty boring. I myself would most likely use podcasting in my own classroom. But I would probably offer a video format as well. I look forward to reading more of your blogs.

  3. I added 3 videos you were to watch and comment on in your weekly blog post. They are in the class blog. It is extremely important that you read the class blog daily and do the additional work that is assigned there. You probably saw that assignment but could not hear the audio. As soon as you get your device working with videos and podcasts, please complete that assignment.

  4. I am looking in the class blog. I do not see it unless I am looking in the wrong place. What are the 3 videos? I also email Dr. Holston, so hopefully I will hear back from him.

  5. Tiffany,
I'm not a huge fan of podcasts as it is, but I never thought of them being an un-useful tool until I read your blog. For most podcasts could be a great, (boring in my opinion) way of sharing information or learning, but if you have a hearing impairment, what's the point? I've always been a visual person, so video podcasts seem to be a better idea to me, maybe thats something that audio podcasts will convert over too completely. I really enjoyed reading your blog, and it opened my eyes to a very different view to podcasts!
