I agree with some of Mr. Winkle's point about sticking to the old ways. The old ways are basic and it is important to learn the basic as well as updating your ways of learning. That way your mind will stay sharp and you will not have to worry about what to do if something does not work out. No matter how old you are, it is crucial that you keep the basic with you as you are staying up to date with today's technology.

Mr. Winkle Wakes
Mr. Winkle Wakes video is based on the American Literature piece "Rip Van Winkle". After 100 years of sleeping, Mr. Winkle wakes up and found that so much changes has taken place. The world was not as he once knew it, especially with all of the technology being developed. He was not familiar with the advancement of technology and was a little bit afraid of it. I suppose my dad could relate to Mr. Winkle because he is not 100 percent familiar with technology himself. The only comfort that Mr. Winkle found was in a empty classroom with a dusty laptop that have not been touched. I guess he was happy that there were still some that stay to the old ways, which is what my dad is comfortable with. He rather write instead of typing.

I am afraid I disagree with you. I see the "basics" as memorizing and burping back. I think that is ABSOLUTELY to wrong way to teach. And I make every effort to escape that "basic" approach. Maybe there is some other thing you mean by "basics" that I have not considered.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog and point of view, I completely agree that the fundementals are the key to success in the classroom ; technology should be used to enhance learning and is a key eliment when developing reading, writing, and math. Your blog is able to be edited and improved and will help many bored or less confident students thrieve.
ReplyDeleteObviously students need background knowledge to connect their "new" learning to. Part of school's function is to give the students common experiences which allow us to instill a common value system in them. Think of it like the kid version of the "water cooler conversation".
ReplyDeleteMy question is: what do we teach in school that is not longer needed/appropriate? Most students spend most of their day waiting for something to learn that is meaningful to them. There are two types of learning; stuff you have to learn and stuff you want to learn. I guarantee that it is easier to learn things you want to learn and that are meaningful.
I think you may have missed the point of my movie. I didn't think it was such a great thing that school was exactly the same as a hundred years ago.
